Fondly Remembered |
We are sad to report the passing of Cliff Harrow, Class of 1960, on Christmas Eve 2024. The following obituary has been put together by school friend John Beswick, Class of 1960:
Group Captain Clifford Tansley Harrow CEng MRAeS
At school, Cliff was a notable sportsman and played for CHS both at rugby and lacrosse. After school, he joined the RAF and was posted to RAF Henlow where he studied aeronautical engineering.
After graduation, Cliff was appointed as the first Engineering Officer of the newly formed Red Arrow display team, which at the time flew Folland Gnat aircraft.
This was followed by a number of interesting postings including to Rolls Royce in Bristol working on the RB 199 engine that was used in the Tornado aircraft. He then spent three years assigned to NATO in Munich.
In the 1980s, perhaps Cliff’s favourite posting was as Office Commanding Engineering Wing at Kinloss in Scotland.
This was followed by a lecturing appointment at the RAF College at Cranwell and a further period at the MOD in London.
Cliff was Member of the Council of The Royal Aeronautical Society. When Cliff applied for voluntary retirement, the RAF would not release him so he stayed on in the RAF for a further three years.
In retirement, Cliff and his wife, Vanda, trained to be Relate Councillors when they lived in Bedfordshire and later in Scotland. Cliff was very much a family man and later Cliff and Vanda moved to Lincolnshire to be near some of their family.
Cliff was always interested in model aircraft and as a boy he made many models and was a regular customer of Mrs Hill’s model shop in Wilmslow. In recent years, despite ill health, he again made models and was a popular member of the local model aircraft flying club.
Cliff was a true gentleman and will be missed by both his family and his many friends.
