From Thursday 12 May until Saturday 18 June 2022 Old Waconian, Akshay Shah, will be taking to the Olivier Stage at the National Theatre as part of the cast of The Father and the Assassin.
This gripping play follows the thrity year story of the journalist and nationalist, Nathuram Godse. From being a devout follower of the lawyer, champion of non-violence, and beloved leader Mahatma Gandhi; to Godse's radicalisation and ultimately a tragic final encounter.
The play sees Director Indhu Rubasingham (The Great Wave) reuniting with one of India’s most exciting playwrights, Anupama Chandrasekhar.
We asked Akshay how he feels about being part of such an important production:
"I guess what I’m most excited about is being part of a production that feels like a really historic moment for the National Theatre. This is a play written by a female South Asian writer, directed by a female South Asian Director, and has a fully South Asian cast. I think this is one of the first times a team like this has ever been on the Olivier Stage at the National and it feels so meaningful! The importance of what this play represents isn’t lost on me and every time I look around the rehearsal room it feels so moving to see the team that has been assembled to tell this story about our overlooked and intergenerationally traumatic history with the British Empire. It feels like the right time for an important piece of theatre like this, and I’m really proud and humbled to be a part of it."
