Inspiring OWs Take On Marathon Challenges for The Christie

Over the next couple of months 5 Old Waconians will be testing their endurance and resilience as they take on challenges to support a cause close to their hearts: The Christie Charity

The Loch Ness 24 Challenge

On 24 August, 4 OWs from the Class of 2019 - James and Joe Madeira, Joel 'JJ' Kinsella and Joel Walsh - aka 'Team Lochedin' - will take on the Loch Ness 24 challenge.

This involves completing as many laps of Loch Ness as possible in 24 hours. Each lap is 7km. The challenge works as a relay - the lads aim to have at least one team member running throughout the entire 24-hour period. Their goal is to collectively run 200km - around 29 laps of the loch.

All of them have some connection with The Christie, with either friends or family having had treatment there.

The Berlin Marathon

On 29 September, Sam Everton, Class of 2014, will be taking on the challenge of The Berlin Marathon.

"For those who know me, the mere thought of attempting a marathon is laughable. But, with a little encouragement from friends and the opportunity to raise money for a truly amazing cause, I thought why not.

My family and I have had lots of experience with The Christie. My brother Charlie had been under the hospital’s care for a couple of years before unfortunately losing his stoic battle with cancer. The work they do for this catastrophic illness is second to none. My personal experience only comes from many times spent at the hospital collecting medication for Charlie, where I was always met by such friendly, helpful and committed staff.

Charlie was and always will be my hero and I miss him dearly.  He would find it absolutely hilarious that I was going to run a marathon in his name."
