Old Waconians Take Career Support Virtual

The end of this academic year was unsettling for many of our students without the opportunity for physical work experience or talks from experts in school. Our Old Waconians have helped to support our students virtually during this time.

After answering a Year 12 student’s questions by email, veterinary surgeon Jo Sutton, Class of 2009, offered to share her experiences further via a Google Meet call. With some aspiring vets she discussed work experience, life as a vet, personal statements, how to write a competitive application, interview questions and ethical issues she faces in her role.

Inspired by Jo’s call, more virtual Q&As took place with engineer Rick Totten, Class of 2009, and doctor Laura McArthur, Class of 2007.

Rick shared why he wanted to get involved: “I think it’s important that students get an insight into the individual paths that Old Waconians have taken since leaving CHS in order to demystify the university / early career transitions. For me the message was that there is no pressure to have a perfectly formed view of their career path whilst still at school and that it is better to spend their time focussing on near term goals. I wanted to get this across by describing how I had moved through quite a lot of different roles since I left CHS none of which were necessarily expected until the opportunity presented itself.

I think the recent culture shift placing a stronger emphasis on community made me think that I should look to invest in the communities I am involved with and this seemed like a good opportunity to do that.”
