“It's truly mind-blowing to think I was the kid who just loved dinosaurs and wanted to be a palaeontologist. Passion can take you far in life.” – Dr. Dean Lomax
An event especially for CHS Junior School families (Year 3 - Year 6), we introduce 'chEd Talk Junior' - it’s one we’re sure you’re going to dig!
In January, news broke of one of the greatest finds in British palaeontological history, a 10-metre-long giant ichthyosaur found in Rutland. The discovery rocked the world.
The ‘Rutland Sea Dragon’, as it became known, represents the largest complete skeleton of an ichthyosaur or any prehistoric reptile ever found in the UK.
This is just one of many career highlights for Palaeontologist and excavation leader, Dr. Dean Lomax - who we’re thrilled to welcome to CHS on Wednesday 12 October.

Before sharing his adventures with Senior & Sixth Form pupils in the evening, he will give CHS Junior School families (Year 3 - Year 6) a fascinating and roarsome afternoon insight into the world of digging for dinosaurs with a unique Show & Tell. Find out what a dinosour really is, and take a look at real life fossils!
Dr Lomax's story is a hugely inspiring one of resilience and endeavour - showing the power of passion, even when odds are stacked against you. Growing up, he was simply a boy who loved dinosaurs and even without A Level science or having the qualifications or finances to go to university, he achieved his PhD at University of Manchester and is now an international expert on ichthyosaurs adding 50+ scientific papers, 10 books, and TV show host to his many achievements. He even won a gold medal for science communication at the Houses of Parliament!
There is no charge to CHS families for this event which we expect will be extremely popular - Dean’s recent TED X Manchester talk has just been selected as a flagship watch on the worldwide TED network - so be sure to reserve your spot now to avoid disappointment.
